New Paper about AppleScript

AppleScript - a story worth telling (.pdf)

"... On a technical level, its model of pluggable embedded scripting languages has become commonplace. The communication mechanism of Apple Events, which is certainly inferior to RPC mechanisms for single-machine or in-process interactions, may turn out to be a good model for web services. Many of the current problems in AppleScript can be traced to the use of syntax based on natural language; however, the ability to create pluggable dialects may provide a solution in the future, by creating a new syntax based on more conventional programming language styles...."

DittyBot - An Applescript Adventure

.. what a geek .. the ueber-use-case for AppleScripts .. it integrates iTunes, SMS, Skype and your cellphone in the ultimate way .. :-)

What DittyBot does:

You send a text message from your mobile phone to your POP email account. Your text message should contain the keywords of a song title (and possibly an artist name) that you want to hear. DittyBot finds that email (he checks Mail every 45 seconds) and copies the song name into a text file. The song name is then copied into iTunes and a playlist is created from your search. Next, DittyBot loads Skype (the internet telephony app) and begins calling your mobile phone. Your mobile phone rings and when you pick it up, you should hear your song start playing in all its compressed glory. DittyBot will play your selection to you over your phone until you hang up. Mind you, this all should happen within 1 minute of sending your song request (depending on the speed of your POP server). Sometimes it’s even quicker!

Buy DRM-free songs from the iTunes Music Store

Buy DRM-free songs from the iTunes Music Store:

Jon Johansen, aka DVD Jon, aka the secret crush of hackers and DRM-haters everywhere, has struck again. And this time he’s not screwing around, he’s done something that will so seriously provoke Apple and the recording industry that he may have to go into hiding: he’s figured out how to buy DRM-free tracks from the iTunes Music Store. How? With a PyMusique, a new front-end he and some pals/future co-defendants created for the iTunes Music Store that let’s you buy songs without any of that bothersome DRM stuff. Seems that our good friend discovered that when you buy something from the iTMS, the DRM is only added to the tracks after you’ve purchased and downloaded them, which sort of makes sense since they do need to be tagged to your account. You’ll still have to actually pay for the music, but PyMusique conveniently neglects to wrap the file with any copy protection, which means you’re free to do what you want with the unrestricted file, including copying it to multiple machines or sharing it over P2P. Hard to imagine how this could possibly be legal, since Apple specifically requires you to access the iTMS only through their software (Laurie Duncan actually read the ToS and checked), but you may as well enjoy the next six to twelve hours before Apple devises a way lock PyMusique users out.

BackJack

I decided to try BackJack to back these users up individually. BackJack is a Mac-only Internet backup service that has been around since 1998.

The BackJack client software is nice, with a simple interface containing buttons labeled Backups, Recover, Maintenance, Logs and Preferences. Files are automatically compressed & encrypted on the client machine using standard Unix GZip with a CAST 128-bit key algorithm and MD5 hash (same as Blowfish & PGP). The encryption key is based on the password you set up initially, making backups very secure - files cannot be restored without the password, and all data is encrypted during transfer. Automated schedules are easy to set up.

Backups can overwrite the previous one (snapshot) or be incremental (can keep the last x number of versions). No limit to the number of versions you can keep; if it goes over the monthly cap, you just get billed at the next higher level.

I ran a test restore of my 108 MB Entourage database, which BackJack had compressed to 38 MB. The recovery took 8 minutes and worked perfectly.

BackJack's backups are done to 2 geographically separate locations which have their own offsite backups.

Network backup

I figured I should keep a PowerBook backup on my Jaguar Server since it has plenty of disk space available, so I searched VersionTracker for a sync utility that could accomplish this with little or no effort on my part.

I tried Retrospect Express, ChronoSync, FoldersSynchronizer, RSyncx and a couple of others.

None of these utilities were able to complete a backup of my 4 GB Documents folder over Ethernet (well, AirPort to enet). Some of the files that did complete the journey had problems, including changed line endings and permission issues.

The utility that finally worked was File Synchronization :

File Synchronization is an utility that, as its name implies, has the ability to synchronize multiple pairs of folders or files. It has been designed to be easy to use and quick to do the job. Formac DVD Software

Formac
Here is another update on the new Formac DVD authoring software (v2.0).
Yesterday I used the __demo__ mode in the new Formac software to create some
test DVD images and just within the last hour I tried burning the
AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directories that the Formac software produced onto a
DVD-RW disk. Well, well -- the disk seems to work perfectly in my nearly two-
year-old Sony DVP-S570D (this player isn't even spec'd for CD-R let alone DVD-
RW). All I had to do is select the "DVD" format option in Toast Titanium and drag
copy the folders from my hard disk to the Toast window. The DVD burner I'm
using is a Sony DRU-500A in an external Firewire case (the ADS Pyro kit).

Add Rendezvous support in Chimera

This feature will only be enabled if the "chimera.enable_rendezvous" pref is set to true, and you are running on 10.2.3 or later. In this case, a new menu item will show up in the Go menu, called "Local Network Services", with a submenu. The first submenu item points to an info page on zeroconf.org. If any services are available, they will be listed under a separator. We look for http, https and ftp services. Choosing a service from the submenu should connect to that server in a new window/tab (following the prefs for new link opening). For FTP, you will be prompted for a username, and then a password (it sucks like this because of bug 124561).

For testing, download this: <http://www.opensource.apple.com/projects/rendezvous/source/Rendezvous.tar.gz> (you'll need an apple opensource login). In the "mDNSMacOSX/Applications" folder, build DNSServiceBrowser and DNSServiceRegistration. You can use these apps to browse available services (which should match what chimera displays in the menu), and register services (e.g. for http). Note that Mac OS X seems to automatically publish an ftp service if you turned on FTP in the Sharing System Pref pane. You'll have to use DNSServiceRegistration to publish http. Ensure that Chimera uses the path you set in the 'Information' field. Chimera's submenu should dynamically update as services appear and disappear.

rsync

Scenario
As a Solaris admin, I have a hardware failover server, and I need to mirror the web_site directory from the primary to secondary server. I use rsync running as a daemon on the "server" to mirror (synchronize) the secondary client. I do this via a cron job at midnight, so I'm never more than 24 hours behind.

This will allow you to synchronize directories and mirror from another machine as a client. Better than remote copy for me. Here's how to do it.

1. Create a file called rsync in "/etc/xinet.d/"

Contents:

# default: off
# description: The rsync server is a good
# addition to an ftp server, as it
# allows crc check summing etc.
service rsync
{
disable = no
log_on_failure += USERID
socket_type = stream
user = root
server = /usr/bin/rsync
server_args = --daemon
wait = no
only_from = 10.0.0.0
}
# This "only_from = 10.0.0.0" Covers this network.
# Enter the IP or range of which machine can access this sever.

2. Add the port in "/etc/services":

rsync 873/tcp # rsync
rsync 873/udp # rsync

I would place it numerically in the 800 range. (duh) ;-)

3. You'll need a rsyncd.conf file in /etc. This file with provide your server with mappings to the directory you wish to serve.

[websites]
path = /web_sites
comment = Web Site Directory for OS X

Other options are available:

auth users = tridge, susan
secrets file = /etc/rsyncd.secrets

The /etc/rsyncd.secrets file would look something like this:

tridge:mypass
susan:herpass

I don't use it. If you do, chmod the file to rw acces for root only. Make as many path mappings as you wish.

4. Does it work? Test it.

To see which maps you have set up in rsyncd.conf you'll need to type on the command line:

% rsync localhost::

This should return:

web_sites Web Site Directory

For the one we set up.

5. Start your engines:

Know you are ready to do some sexy rsync'n. You do not have to set up rsync on the CLIENT machine as you did the server unless you want to (as a daemon). But if you want to "Go the other way" so to speak you will. The command and arguments for me on the CLIENT box is:

% rsync -og --compress --recursive --times
--perms --links --delete --verbose
admin@10.0.0.150::web_sites /web_sites/

[The rsync command should be one line, not three as shown here].

I'm preserving owner, groups - compressing the stream, preserving times, permissions, symlinks (if any) - deleting files from the client not on the requesting client - verbose mode - I am admin@10.0.0.150 request my mapped drive in rsyncd.conf [web_sites] to update the web_site directory from the receiving server on /web_sites

You can exclude your MP3's by adding "--exclude=*.mp3" to the arguments, as many excludes as you wish.

Note that my directory is also called "/web_sites" on the CLIENT. Yours could be "Library/Webserver/Documents/" in keeping with the OS X default path. Could put it in /some_other_directory/tmp

You can -HUP xinetd to start the services, or reboot. Whatever you wish to do.

You're good to go! Have fun.
